Market on Main is an absolutely one-of-a-kind dining, retail, and entertainment destination in downtown Ottumwa. Located at 331 E Main St, the Market was – believe it or not – originally built as the three story Grand Opera House in 1891. In 1941 the top two stories were demolished, leaving – more or less – the present structure. Of course significant renovations were undertaken in order to accommodate the Market’s current kitchens, merchant booths, and performance venue space.
The Market is home to about two dozen crafters, jewelry makers, artists, and retail merchants. Products range from beautiful and functional handmade pottery to Iowa-produced eggs to indie-published literary fiction. In addition, diners will find several quick service restaurants and food vendors serving scratch-made lunch, desserts, and dinner options – including BBQ, authentic northern Mexican cuisine, all-American deli favorites, fresh bakery, and incredible fudge flavors! The Market also features a full bar very much focused on the local – highlighting Iowa craft breweries, wineries, and distilleries – as well as quality national and international selections.
Finally, the Market is proud to feature on a regular basis local and regional musicians and performing arts groups in our performance venue. Performers range from nationally recognized singer-songwriters to rock bands and theatrical performances – and everything in between.
The Market strives to connect Iowa consumers with Iowa producers, independent Iowa businesses, and Iowa artists. Celebrate local talent and help build a more energetic and diverse local economy at Market on Main!
